The legacy continues for the International Kart Federation (IKF) and the historic Sprint GrandNationals. The 2021 edition is scheduled for the October 15-17 weekend with the Prairie City Kart Track to welcome competitors to the Rancho Cordova, California facility. The three-day event will culminate in the main events on Sunday, where each of the nine class winners will receive the coveted IKF Duffy trophy.
The Prairie City Kart Track is among the premier karting circuits in northern California, roughly 20 miles from downtown Sacramento. The facility is owned and operated by Donald Durbin Jr., a former IKF Duffy winner with decades of experience within the sport and the karting industry. Since the end of the 2019 season when the Durbin family took over control of the Prairie City track, they have made huge efforts to improve the facility on and off the course.
“We are very excited to have the opportunity to host the 2021 IKF Sprint GrandNationals,” stated Donald Durbin Jr. of Prairie City Kart Track. “Last year was a challenge for us and everyone, and now we are excited to show off all the hard work and dedication we have put in to making Prairie City Kart Track a destination for karting here in the United States.”
The International Kart Federation was among the founding organizations of karting, dating back to the late 1950s. One of the most prestigious trophies in North American karting is the IKF ‘Duffy’. Originally known as the ‘Joe Karter’ award, the 12-inch solid bronze statuette was re-named to honor Frank ‘Duffy’ Livingstone – one of the original pioneers of karting.
“I’m thrilled to be able to take this year’s IKF Sprint GrandNationals to Prairie City,” added Tom Kutscher of International Kart Federation. “After having to move the 2020 Grands to Santa Maria, IKF is anxious to let Prairie City host and show off all their hard work they have put into the track to make their facility one of the top in the state of California and the west coast. The Durbin family have a long and active history with our organization, exactly what we love about our sport. I can’t wait to see who is able to claim the Duffy trophies in Prairie City.”
The 2021 IKF Sprint GrandNationals will feature nine categories competing for a Duffy trophy. The Briggs & Stratton 206 engine platform remains one of the top grassroots powerplants, and will be featured in five divisions; Junior 1 206, Junior 2 206, Senior 206, Masters 206, and Grand Masters 206 (ages 50 and older). KA100 Senior and KA100 Junior classes are among the most popular throughout the country with the 100cc IAME engine package, and are returning as categories at the IKF Sprint GrandNationals. Mini Swift is the 2-cycle category offered for the Cadet-level drivers, keeping in line with the IAME engine platform. A ninth class will be announced in the coming days.
An unofficial practice is scheduled for Thursday, October 14 before official practice [and Qualifying] begins Friday, October 15. The format for the event over Saturday and Sunday includes three rounds of heat races, and the main events. A complimentary barbeque is set for Friday evening, offering food and drinks for all in attendance. The weekend prior to the IKF Sprint GrandNationals, the KPX Karting Championship will be hosting their season finale at the Prairie City Kart Track on October 9-10, which will serve as a great warm-up event for those wishing to gear-up to battle for the Duffy trophies.
