IKF Kicks Off the First Round of IKF Grand National Events
50th Anniversary Celebration Begins with
2-Cycle Sprint and Shifter Grand Nationals

ONTARIO, CALIF - - (May 23, 2007) The International Kart Federation (IKF) office is in fifth gear preparing for the upcoming five rounds of IKF Grand National events for seven divisions of karting. Celebrating its 50 th anniversary, the first round of action will be the 2-cycle Sprint and Shifter Grand Nationals presented by King Taco June 19-23 at Buttonwillow Raceway.

Over 400 entries are expected to contest on the seven-tenths mile circuit located 30 miles west of Bakersfield , Calif. “Being our 50 th anniversary, it will be a monumental event,” said Wayne Brown , IKF President. “In celebration, we’ll be giving out special edition caps and t-shirts to all entries to commemorate the event and there’s also a complimentary dinner scheduled after practice Tuesday night and hosted by PKS Kart Supplies and Position One Motorsports.” Brown added.

Competition is expected to be fierce in all classes as drivers vie for the oldest and one of the most coveted trophies in karting - the Duffy, a 13 pound bronze statue mounted on a wooden base. “Drivers are still passionate about taking home the prestigious Duffy and it certainly won’t be a cake walk,” said race director, Don Moormeister. Twenty-two classes with two local option classes (HPV-4 Heavy and Kid Karts) will contest. The Kid Kart class winner will be awarded the Future Stars of Karting Championship award in place of the Duffy. In addition, IKF will present the Lake Speed Achievement of Excellence perpetual trophy, honoring the 1978 World Karting Champion from Kannapolis , N.C.

“This should be a fun family-oriented event with an abundant supply of top name drivers,” said Moormeister. Among the top names expected are IKF Experts, Matt Johnson and Jake DeRoads in the senior categories. Johnson and DeRoads will mix it up with 2007 point contenders Joey Licata, Jr., Chris Freckleton, Neil McCoy, Mike Botelho, Jr., and Chris Schribner. Among top cadet category drivers, Raquel Martinez and Camden Geise will go head-to- head with a group of young talent. The star-studded junior fields include many who are in their junior debut year. Look for Taylor Miinch, Miles Maroney, Colby Potts, Donny St. Ours and more. “These are only a few of the many skillful names expected to arrive. “As always, the junior and cadet field in IKF are amazing to watch and we expect to have maxed out classes,” Moormeister said.

Official event practice begins June 19 with racing action starting June 20-June 23.

The Road Race Grand Nationals are scheduled July 5-7 at Reno Fernley Raceway in Fernley, Nev., followed by the 4-Cycle Speedway nationals at Rolling Thunder Speedway in Huron, SD, July 9-13. The 2-Cycle Speedway and Speedway Midget nationals are set for July 24-27 at Delaware Speedway in Marion , Iowa and 4-cycle Sprint Grand Nationals will be held July 25-28 at Atwater Kart Track in Atwater , Calif.

IKF Scouts for Second Lake Speed Excellence in Karting Recipient

Perpetual Award Honoring Former World Champ to be Presented at IKF 2-Cycle Sprint Grand Nationals.

ONTARIO , CALIF - - ( May 1, 2007 ) The International Kart Federation (IKF) continues a legacy of tradition this June with the presentation of the Lake Speed Achievement of Excellence karting award this June. The perpetual award, honoring the 1978 World Karting Champion, will honor its second recipient to be determined at the IKF 2-cycle Sprint Grand Nationals presented by King Taco June 19-23 at Buttonwillow Raceway Park in Buttonwillow , Calif.

2007 Achievement trophyThe 2006 recipient, Matt Johnson of Las Vegas , Nev. , will help select the future recipient who could be a driver, team, kart shop or combination thereof. Johnson, along with a panel of scouts, will determine a winner based on a multitude of criteria including sportsmanship, competitive achievement, benevolence and professional appearance during the race event.

“We wanted to recognize excellence in the 2-cycle sprint division with a long term award similar to the Troy Ruttman and Jim Clark award established many years ago for the road racing division,” said Wayne Brown, IKF President. Lake exemplifies what karting should be all about – honesty, integrity, overcoming adversity, sportsmanship, professional attitude and appearance, a willingness to help others and so much more,” Brown added.

“Like Matt (Johnson), there are so many exceptional people in karting and we felt the award should be based not solely on achievement, but on a well-rounded package representing everything good about kart racing,” Speed said. “Matt met all of the criteria; he excelled on track, overcame many obstacles throughout the seasonLake Speed Excellence Award and is highly respected. I look forward to meeting the 2007 winner and know there are many candidates out there,” he added.

The award is a work of art; weighing in at 20 pounds, it stands just over two-feet in height. The cup, manufactured by the same company who produces the Oscar and Emmy, is made of solid brass and mounted on a three-tier solid-walnut base. On the base, each recipient’s name will be etched in gold on a small black plate. Johnson has kept the award since last August and will pass it along to the next recipient this June. Every winner will also receive a smaller mock version of the award to keep as a lifetime memento.

“We encourage everyone at the Sprint Grand Nationals this year to help us be on the look-out for potential candidates. As the event unfolds, we want to hear about the extraordinary circumstances surrounding each driver and fairly consider all based on our pre-determined criteria. Don’t be shy and let us know about the circumstances of yourself or of someone you feel is worthy,” explained Brown.

Special recognition and gratitude for sponsorship of this award goes out to Art and Rod Verlengiere of RLV Tuned Exhaust, Lynn Haddock of Haddock, Ltd., Speed’s long-time friend and crew chief in his 1978 world championship win, and Rhonda (Mims) and Wayne Brown of O&H Kart Products.

Fast Facts – Lake Speed
DOB: Jan. 17, 1948
Resides: Kannapolis , NC
Hometown: Jackson, Miss.
Wife: Ricé – Children: Lake Speed , Jr., Maurie, Sarah Ann & Christopher

Lake Speed began his karting career at the age of 13 and achieved six IKF Grand National titles. In 1978, he won the ultimate karting title of CIK World Champion in Le Mans , France with the help of his long-time friend and tuner, Lynn Haddock. This was their sixth attempt at the World Championship title and the duo took off for Europe after a last minute decision to give it one more try. Speed was truly an underdog at the event. With only three engines and a tireless kart they arrived at the circuit with their kart mounted on top of a rental car. Speed scored two firsts and a fourth in the three main races contesting against 94 drivers representing 26 countries including the late Aryton Senna. Thus far, Speed is the only American driver to achieve this title. He contested with a Birel direct drive chassis powered by a Parilla TT-22 100cc engine.

Speed went on to contest in NASCAR’s Grand National series, later known as the Winston Cup, in 1980. With 402 starts and over $5 million in earnings, he retired from NASCAR in 1998 with one win at Darlington , a second in the Daytona 500 and 14 top fives. Speed has recently returned to karting and enjoys racing in the 125cc TaG class in local and select national events in both the sprint and road race divisions of karting.
