IKF Announces 2007 Lake Speed Achievement of Excellence Award Winner at 2 Cycle Sprint Grand Nationals

Nick Johnston Earns Prestigious Title at IKF 2-Cycle Sprint Grand Nationals

ONTARIO , CALIF. - - ( July 20, 2007 ) Nick Johnston of Northridge , Calif., was named as the second recipient of the Lake Speed Achievement of Excellence award at the IKF 2-Cycle Sprint Grand Nationals in June. Johnston , 17, was one of several candidates considered at the Buttonwillow Raceway Park event by a panel of under-cover scouts that included industry professionals, journalists, event directors, former IKF national champions and experts, two IKF Board of Directors, and last year’s recipient, Matt Johnson , who raced wheel to wheel with Johnston at the event.

The two-foot, solid brass perpetual award honoring the 1978 World Karting Champion, is recognized as one of the most prestigious awards offered in 2-cycle sprint racing. Established in 2006 to recognize outstanding role models in sprint racing, the award is determined by a multitude of criteria choices including sportsmanship, overcoming adversity, positive attitude, love of karting, appearance, performance on track and willingness to help others. “Setting up the award goals, criteria and selecting the cup now seems easy compared to choosing a winner this year,” said IKF president, Wayne Brown .

“What began with a list of about 10 candidates, eventually narrowed down to about six drivers on the last day. The final decision was still taking place during the awards ceremony making it an extremely difficult decision unlike last year, where Matt Johnson was a clear-cut choice,” Brown added.

Johnston ’s performance on track was phenomenal as with several others. Johnston earned two Screaming Eagles (pole positions) in Formula Y and HPV 3 and two Duffies (Grand National titles) in HPV 3 and HPV 4 where he started last on the grid for the final. He also missed both practice days of the event, having to stay at home to complete his junior year final exams at school.

Johnston attends Birmingham High School in Lake Balboa , Calif. , and started racing when he was eight years old. His parents are Erica and Ron Johnston and father Ron was a huge race fan who gave his son three choices, Jr. Dragsters, Karts or Motocross.

Johnston was totally surprised when his name was called out. “I wasn’t expecting it at all. The award means so much to me; it’s more than just winning a race, it was being chosen by a panel of judges and my peers. With it comes huge responsibility and now I have to make sure I keep true to the nature of the award and set a great example for younger drivers. It’s such a great feeling to know that over the next 20 years, somebody is going to win this award and wonder who I am. Maybe by then, I’ll be a champion of some higher racing series. I think the most important qualities will be sportsmanship, not wrecking and keeping my temper cool,” Johnston said.

“I enjoyed speaking with Nick on the phone, said Speed. He seems like such a nice young man and aware of the responsibilities that go along with it. It’s great to see the enthusiasm this award has created in areas of sportsmanship,” he added.

Adding the Lake Speed Achievement of Excellence award to his impressive resume is icing on the cake. Since his start, Johnston has raced in IKF, Stars of Karting, World Karting Association (WKA) and in the Rotax Max Challenge series. Johnston ’s first big achievement came in 2003, as the Jr. Superbox Stars of Karting finale winner. In 2004, he earned an IKF Duffy and two Screaming Eagles as well as two WKA Grand National wins and two WKA championship series titles in the western division. He moved to seniors in 2005 and earned four top 10’s in Stars’ ICA competition. By 2006, he again earned four top 10’s, a pole and a heat race victory in Stars’ ICA competition. In addition to his two IKF Grand National wins this year, he has an IKF regional race win and three top fives in the Gatorz Rotax Max Challenge series.

Johnston ’s role models in motor sports include Matt Johnson in karting and Justin Sofio in the Champ Car Atlantic Championship. College plans are currently under consideration for the high school senior with a decision to be made this year. “I obviously would love to be a professional race car driver, but if not that, I would like to do something in the computer or racing industry.
