Press Release from TaG Work Group
The group is made up of representatives from IKF, K.A.R.T., SKUSA, Stars of Karting, TAG USA , and WKA.
TAG Work Group addresses current TAG issues and expands its mission.
For the past year, members of the TAG Work Group have continued to work together to maintain a common set of engine specifications for the TAG engines competing in their respective organizations. Recently Work Group members met to address several issues around the Tillotson 334 Carburetor used on the Parilla Leopard and BM Jaguar engines. The members felt that it was important that they maintain consistency in the specifications of these common carburetors.
As of now, all of the Work Group members approve the Tillotson 334 AB carburetor, and all but WKA also allow the use of the 334 A. After due consideration, however, the members agreed that the new Tillotson 334 AA carburetor will not be allowed.
In addition to considering the new carburetor, the group discussed questions submitted by a California based kart shop. They used this discussion to refine the carburetor rules. Following are the questions and the group’s response:
- Is the carburetor inlet tension spring non-tech? Yes.
- Is the use of inlet tension spring shims legal? No. The shims do not come with the carburetor and would constitute addition of metal.
- If only a stock inlet spring can be run, then how is it determined that the inlet spring is indeed stock? Since the inlet spring tension is non-tech, no inspection procedure is required.
- Is bending the fulcrum lever arm considered of modification of that part? No.
- Is bending the throttle shaft arm to correct throttle shutter operation legal? Yes.
- Is removal and replacement of the Welch plug legal? Removal and replacement of the Welch Plug is legal, but drilling the holes under the plug is illegal. (Correction - remove "not" - done November 16, 2006)
- Is the replacement of the inlet seat legal? Replacement of the inlet seat is legal provided that it is replaced with a stock seat.
During their most recent meeting, the TAG Work Group members reflected on past accomplishments and future direction. In addition to developing and maintaining a common set of engine rules, the Work Group also worked with engine importers to resolve specification irregularities and review new non-performance related parts.
Members of the group have also developed common Kid Kart engine rules and shared information on the new Honda Spec 125 Shifter classes. The Group is currently considering the new CIK bumper rule. In the past month, the Group has grown with the addition of a representative from the Stars of Karting. As a result, the TAG Work Group has become a forum for representatives of all of the major kart racing sanctioning bodies to share information and work together.
Competitors wanting more information can contact their organization’s representative to the TAG Work Group.

IKF Establishes Lake Speed Excellence in Karting Award
Perpetual Award Honoring Former World Champ
Kicks Off at IKF 2-Cycle Sprint Grand Nationals
ONTARIO , CALIF - - ( June 12, 2006 ) The International Kart Federation (IKF) begins a legacy of tradition this August with the introduction of the Lake Speed Achievement of Excellence karting award. The perpetual award, honoring the 1978 World Karting Champion will have its first recipient at the IKF 2-cycle Sprint Grand Nationals August 3-6 presented during the awards ceremony at the CalSpeed Kart Track, located at California Speedway in Fontana , Calif. The to-be-named recipient could be a driver, team, kart shop or combination thereof and will be determined based on a multitude of criteria primarily based on sportsmanship, competition achievement and professional appearance during the race event.

“We wanted to recognize excellence in the 2-cycle sprint division with a long term award similar to the Troy Ruttman and Jim Clark award established many years ago for the road racing division,” said Wayne Brown, IKF board of director. “In determining who to name the award after, Lake ’s name came up often and he was agreed upon unanimously by everyone consulted. Lake exemplifies what karting should be all about – honestly, integrity, overcoming adversity, sportsmanship, professional attitude and appearance, a willingness to help others and so much more,” Brown added.
“It’s a true honor to have an award such as this in my name and I’m not even dead yet,” joked Speed. “I’ve raced karts for many years that included numerous grand national events. The recognition of outstanding people in the sport is long-overdue. There are so many exceptional people and we all felt it should be based not solely on achievement, but on a well-rounded package representing everything good about kart racing,” Speed added.
The award is a work of art; weighing in at 20 pounds, it stands just over two-feet in height. The cup, manufactured by the same company who produces the Oscar and Emmy, is made of solid brass and mounted on a three-tier solid-walnut base. On the base, each recipient’s name will be etched in gold on a small black plate. The current year recipient will keep the award for a full year and then pass along to the next recipient the following year. Every winner will also receive a smaller mock version of the award to keep as a lifetime memento.
“We encourage everyone at the Sprint Grand Nationals this year to help us be on the look-out for potential candidates. As the event unfolds, we want to hear about the extraordinary circumstances surrounding each driver and fairly consider all based on our pre-determined criteria,” explained Brown.
Special recognition and gratitude for sponsorship of this award goes out to Art and Rod Verlengiere of RLV Tuned Exhaust, Lynn Haddock of Haddock, Ltd., Speed’s long-time friend and crew chief in his 1978 world championship win, and Rhonda (Mims) and Wayne Brown of O&H Kart Products.
“Our only regret is not having this award established sooner to depict the true history of the IKF Sprint Grand Nationals with so many of our historic favorites such as Diz and Mark Dismore, Lynn Haddock, Kathey Hartman, Scott Pruett and more,” said Jack Lehmann, IKF president. “We are all very excited at the IKF office,” he added.

Fast Facts – Lake Speed
DOB: Jan. 17, 1948
Resides: Kannapolis , NC
Hometown: Jackson, Miss.
Wife: Ricé – Children: Lake Speed , Jr., Maurie, Sarah Ann & Christopher
Lake Speed began his karting career at the age of 13 and achieved six IKF Grand National titles. In 1978, he won the ultimate karting title of CIK World Champion in Le Mans , France with the help of his long-time friend, Lynn Haddock. This was their sixth attempt at the World Championship title and the duo took off for Europe after a last minute decision to give it one more try. Speed was truly an underdog at the event. With only three engines and a tireless kart they arrived at the circuit with their kart mounted on top of their rental car. Speed scored two firsts and a fourth in the three main races contesting against 94 drivers representing 26 countries including the late Aryton Senna. Thus far, Speed is the only American driver to achieve this title. He contested with a Birel direct drive chassis powered by a Parilla TT-22 100cc engine.
Speed went on to contest in NASCAR’s Grand National series, later known as the Winston Cup, in 1980. With 402 starts and over $5 million in earnings, he retired from NASCAR in 1998 with one win at Darlington , a second in the Daytona 500 and 14 top fives. Speed has recently returned to karting and enjoys racing in the 125cc TaG class in local and select national events.
