NEWS FLASH!! IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT FOR TAG LEOPARD COMPETITORS:
As many of you know there has been an issue with Leopard TAG engines legality. Basically sometime during the last part of 2004 IAME, the manufacturer of the engine, made changes to the cylinder. These changes, while legal under the system of tech inspection commonly used in Europe , are not legal under IKF, WKA, TAG/USA, SKUSA or KART rules. Since a higher exhaust port does improve performance this change is not deemed legal. To further complicate the issue IKF Region 11 chose to use the European method of measurement for their National Cup classes so that while these engines may pass the European (exhaust duration) measurement they may not pass the exhaust height rule. Note that WKA and TAG/USA do not allow the 2005 engine to compete. IKF does not restrict their use but we believe very few will pass our tech.
It is indeed unfortunate that we were not made aware of the situation prior to last weekend. It took considerable discussion with many parties to determine exactly the problem and to determine our course of action. Note that this rule has been in effect since January 16, 2005 under IKF rules and prior to that under the other organizations rules. We stress again that this is not a new rule or a new method of measurement.
We will continue to enforce the printed exhaust height rule (1.415" with the LAD tool) at the Sprint Grand Nationals at Moran Raceway.
We sincerely regret the inconvenience this may cause our members but feel it necessary to enforce the rules fairly for all competitors.

Jack Hoegerl, IKF Tech Director
John Motley, IKF TAG Committee Chair

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT FOR RACERS ATTENDING THE 2005 IKF 4 CYCLE SPRINT GRAND NATIONALS AT SANTA MARIA - TIRE COMPOUND CHANGE
Bridgestone YHC compound tires are approved for use at the 4 Cycle Sprint Grand Nationals at Santa Maria. The sizes for each class must be as specified in Section 200.1 of the December 2004 Karter News.
Racers may use the originally specified Dunlop SL4 tires, but be aware that consensus is that the surface at Santa Maria is such that the Bridgestones will likely be faster due to the amount of rubber that will be laid down on the track during the event.
This late change has been made due to customs problems with the containers of Dunlop tires. Russell Karting Specialties, Inc, the Dunlop importer, has made every effort to acquire the tires.
Jim Russell, Jr. has stated that original, wrapped SL4 tires may be returned to the original Dealer, or Russell Karting Specialties, for refund. Russell has also suggested that racers finding themselves with unneeded SL4 tires offer them for sale on e karting news or other on-line forum as there is a demand in other parts of the country also.
IKF regrets the confusion caused by this unfortunate situation.
